Scholars Gather at the Barn By Kay Blocker Acting Scribe The Nashville Scholars met on May 17 at Chaffin's Barn to enjoy a trilogy of Sherlock Holmes plays: "The Adventure of The Red Circle, The Adventure of the Cardboard Box, and The Man with the Twisted Lip. In the past, there were presentations of The Speckled Band, The Crooked Man, The Second Stain, The Red-Headed League, A Scandal in Bohemia, The Adventure of the Dancing Men and the Hound of the Baskervilles. We are so lucky to have a local theater willing to do the SH stories. This year's Holmes play ends its engagement June 7th. If you miss out or if you just want to catch another Barn play, you might consider their production of Ten Little Indians October 14 - November 15. The
old swimmin' hole; come join us for some water fun at Davice and Matt's
private pool... |
JUNE MEETING The
regularly scheduled meeting for June 19 now becomes the picnic at Davice's
place on 21 June. There will be an auction to raise money for the
club; please bring an item for donating to the auction. Billy Fields
will act as auctioneer. Everyone is encouraged to bring a dish (check
with Davice about what to bring) and to contribute $3 for meat (hot
dogs and hamburgers). Specific details later in this newsletter. ABC Essential and Nonessential Facts about The Three Gables First published in Strand (illus Howard K. Elcock)
Oct 1926, and the American Liberty (illus F.D. Steele) Sept 1926;
in The Case Book of SH 1927. Dated as occurring in 1896, 1902, or 1903,
location Harrow Weald, an urban district of Middlesex. Gables refers
to the triangular upper part of the exterior wall of a building, at
the end of a ridged roof. This story is one that many scholars consider
questionable as being written by Watson or ACD because of Holmes' indulgences
and the improbability of the story.
Saturday, June 21, 1:00-5:00 pm, will be our annual
picnic. This year we'll have a taste of urban living as Davice and
Matt host the event at their apartment house, Capitol Towers. Their
address is 510 Gay Street, just off Fifth between Charlotte and James
Robertson, at the bottom of the hill behind the Capitol.
