Excerpts from the
March 1990 3PP Plugs and Dottles

Reprinted in memory of David Bradley
who passed away March 2002

The annual birthday meeting was a 13 Jan 1990 birthday meeting held at the Bradley mansion. Coming between 2 and 10 pm were 14 people. Tobacconist David Bradley and his father Harold Bradley hosted us…Piper's watched "Sherlock's Younger Smarter Brother" and "The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes" starring Billy Wilder's magnificent set, a re-creation of 1890 Baker Street. Harold Bradley regaled us with tales. He worked in Teddy Roosevelt's 1912 campaign at age nine in Los Angeles where he was raised and went to school…Afterward we gathered around the larder table and sideboard to enjoy birthday cheesecake adorned with chocolate profiles of Sherlock and we drank toasts to 136 years of Sherlockian vitality.

Scholars Gather at the Barn
By Kay Blocker Acting Scribe

The Nashville Scholars met on May 17 at Chaffin's Barn to enjoy a trilogy of Sherlock Holmes plays: "The Adventure of The Red Circle, The Adventure of the Cardboard Box, and The Man with the Twisted Lip. In the past, there were presentations of The Speckled Band, The Crooked Man, The Second Stain, The Red-Headed League, A Scandal in Bohemia, The Adventure of the Dancing Men and the Hound of the Baskervilles. We are so lucky to have a local theater willing to do the SH stories. This year's Holmes play ends its engagement June 7th. If you miss out or if you just want to catch another Barn play, you might consider their production of Ten Little Indians October 14 - November 15.

Swimmin' HoleThe old swimmin' hole; come join us for some water fun at Davice and Matt's private pool...

The June 21 story will be The Three Gables and Quizmasters are Anita and Tom Feller.

ABC
Essential and Nonessential Facts about
The Three Gables

First published in Strand (illus Howard K. Elcock) Oct 1926, and the American Liberty (illus F.D. Steele) Sept 1926; in The Case Book of SH 1927. Dated as occurring in 1896, 1902, or 1903, location Harrow Weald, an urban district of Middlesex. Gables refers to the triangular upper part of the exterior wall of a building, at the end of a ridged roof. This story is one that many scholars consider questionable as being written by Watson or ACD because of Holmes' indulgences and the improbability of the story.

Picnic, Anyone?

Saturday, June 21, 1:00-5:00 pm, will be our annual picnic. This year we'll have a taste of urban living as Davice and Matt host the event at their apartment house, Capitol Towers. Their address is 510 Gay Street, just off Fifth between Charlotte and James Robertson, at the bottom of the hill behind the Capitol. Go to Yahoo Maps (Click for map!)

There's plenty of parking in front since you can use all the reserved spaces along the driveway, open on weekends. When you face the apartment building, take the sidewalk along the right hand side. That will lead you past the pool to the deck, complete with grills, etc. There's a meeting room just inside that we've reserved as well. It has a small refrigerator and sink and bathroom and lots of chairs and tables. We might like to set up the auction there - or the whole thing if the weather is iffy.

You're more than welcome to use the pool, too. Bring your own towel. Bring your beverage of choice, a dish to pass, something for the auction and $3 to cover the cost of the meat. Please let me know if you're coming and what you're bringing to pass. So far we have baked beans (Jerome), two desserts (Anita and Mary Margarette), a kidney bean salad (George-Ann), and the plates, cups, etc. (Colonel Billy).
You can reach us (or the answering machine) at 254-9522.

Your editors, Kay Blocker and Davice Sharpe, are hard at work preparing the next exciting issue of Plugs and Dottles. Thanks for sub-scribing. Come see us in The Music City.
