 Sept
Pub Meeting, continued
by Kay Blocker
Joan had brought back several pictures including the
school museum containing ACD's desk carved with his initials and a
picture of Gillette as Holmes drawn by Fredric Dorr Steele.
Gael mentioned that he had received a phone call from Jack Paget,
the nephew of Sidney Paget. Jack had once visited Gael here in Nashville.
Gael read an excerpt from Courageous Women published in the
Serpentine Muse. Gael said David Hammer will be stopping over
in Nashville first of September. Dinner with David and the Scholars
will be September 2nd at Ellendale restaurant. [Susan Diamond of Chicago
was in town that night and joined us there as well as at the next
Friday's Rashers breakfast.]
Anita and Tom Feller had recently attended the Chattanooga Scifi Con
and would be going to Atlanta's Dracon (with an expected attendance
of 25,000!!) There would be SH items such as a SH play one night.
[The play was cancelled because the actors had another performance
- hence no review. Sorry.]
Dean
presented Holmes and Watson figurines that he had purchased in New
Orleans (look for more details in Shinwell Before Using, below). Dean
passed around new DVDs: The Triumph of SH; The Sign of the Hour, and
Murder at the Baskervilles. These can be found locally at Borders,
Towers, or Media Play. It was mentioned that Sherlock magazine could
be found at the Cool Springs Borders location and that the Naxos audiotapes
could be found at The Great Escape and Sam's store. Dean said the
Rathbone SH collection is to be re-released at some point.
There
will be no formal October meeting, as the Southern Festival of
Books will be occurring. We'll plan on meeting for dinner downtown,
time and place to be decided later. Mulligans and Provence were suggestions;
Billy will check on and present details at the September meeting.
At last year's festival, Davice had talked to the Klinger Annotated
publisher, W.W. Norton, about the possibility of Klinger coming to
the festival in 2004. The Nashville Scholars would host his session
but Norton would pay for Les' trip as part of the book's promotion.
Several members volunteered to pay for his hotel room. A motion was
made that Davice would work on possible arrangements for Klinger's
visit to Nashville's 2004 book festival. 2004 SFB planning starts
early next January. The motion was passed; there were no dissenting
votes.
